Dear God, it’s cold!!

Seriously, it’s freezing out there.  You’d think living in Kansas all my life, I’d be used to it, but no.  Hate hate hate the cold!  I would rather be standing out in a field with no shade in 100 degree weather, wearing the uniform of a Civil War-era soldier, under a fur coat (not a real fur coat, that’s cruel), and drinking a mug of hot ale.  Seriously, that is how much I hate the cold.

Anyway, with the cold comes the inevitable four-letter word we all know we’re going to have to suffer through at some point (you know the one that rhymes with “know”), as well as the knowledge that a certain holiday is upon us; I won’t spell that one out either since I choose to remain non-denominational but bare in mind, I’ll be celebrating the one that rhymes with “Gristmas”.  So when you’re out there in Retail Land, spending money you don’t have on crap for someone that doesn’t need it and probably won’t appreciate it anyway, be sure to be safe, try not to trample people (that’s cruel, too) and make sure to give some change to the lovely people standing outside ringing the bells.  It may not be for them but they certainly do appreciate it.  Plus, I’m sure they don’t care much for cold either.

Happy Belated Turkey Day!

Well, it took a whole week but I finally managed to recover from Thanksgiving, Black Friday and all the fun baking, selling, buying, and crazy merriment this time of year always brings.  Got a little behind in my work as of late and I do apologize.  Tomorrow officially begins the final month of 2011 and I, for one, am in complete disbelief.  Wasn’t it just Halloween?  And Labor Day before that?  And Comic-Con before that?  Yes I know, Comic-Con isn’t actually a holiday but is it any less important?  Btw, the answer is no.

So I guess now that the holiday is over with, I can finally catch my breath and figure out what I’m thankful for.  To start, I’m thankful for my wife for her unconditional love, support and the ability to put up with me day after day.  I”m thankful for family and friends who provide more of the same.  I’m thankful for my health and sanity (what there is left anyway).  And I’m thankful for each and every one of you that stops by here, whether it’s every week, every once in a while, or just now while you take a break from your Netflix queue.
Happy Belated Holidays and be careful out there.  Shoppers be crazy!!!!!!!!

Epic Fail part 2: Electric Boogaloo

Okay, so you know how I mentioned losing my sketchbook to a bunch of nasty hooligans?  Well, I managed to locate them on Facebook, added them as friends, found out where they lived, drove down to Wichita, and waited in the bushes for them to come home from whatever ad agency/law firm/outlet mall department store they work in (because they were dressed really, really nice).  I sprang from my hiding place, tossing my empty cans of Monster Energy drink at them before attacking them full-on with my Darth Maul double-bladed lightsaber, and knocking them out one by one, keeping the last one conscious just long enough to glean from him the whereabouts of my long-lost sketchbook.

Apparently they had just sold it on Craigslist the day before.  Good Grief.

So, I collected the two dollars they’d made off of my art, packed a bag and flew to Helena, Montana where I proceeded to look for a Mr. Edward Larson who had purchased said art and went about planning a similar attack.  Turns out he was an old, blind man who had never been able to look upon any art since he was a young boy, drawing from his own sketchpad, and wanted something to remember those long, lost days of his youth.  How he’d managed to order it online, let alone why, since he could’ve just bought one at a store, I’m not really sure but since he was old, feeble, and blind, he was easy to subdue so I broke in, punched him in the kidneys and was back home with my sketchbook before the end of the night.

So only a couple weeks late, I’m back and the new comic is posted.  And nobody got hurt (except for the three jerks from Wichita and an old blind guy).

And be sure to come back on Thursday and Friday for two all new comics!  Laters!

UPDATE (11/18/11): Due to an overwhelming work schedule, there will be no new comic today.  Today’s strip was supposed to continue last night’s Twilight inspired comic but that has been pushed to next Wednesday instead.  However, as a treat, I’ll post a special comic-related blog on Sunday so be sure to come back and check it out!

Epic Fail

So, it’s a little barren around here right now. My apologies; it’s been a hectic week, plus some angry trick-or-treaters stole my sketchbook.

Between tailgating a football game at my collegiate alma mater (I didn’t graduate but I did go there, so same thing, basically), a post tailgate party/barbecue, a night of next to no sleep and then a day of crazy nonsensical shenanigans, this week’s comic has been delayed. It will be ready to post this Wednesday and as an added treat, the following week will see two brand new comics!

In the meantime, I hope you all had a great holiday, ate lots of candy, and stayed up late watching bad horror movies. Just avoid Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. That one’s just awful.

So about this comic…

To be perfectly honest, “Geek Theory” really hasn’t been that funny lately.

It’s more or less intentional as I am telling an ongoing story, leading up to the characters playing their role-playing superhero game. At some point the comic will veer away from the “joke-of-the-week” formula and into a sequential storyline. I wanted to use the traditional comic strip structure to introduce the characters and core concept of my little world. See, “Geek Theory” has been a pet project of mine for some time and I’ve spent the last year or so really trying to figure out how best to create these characters and get them out into the world.

As of now the script for the next storyline is being written and will be available on this site very soon. In the meantime, new comics will still be available every week to continue the arc I’ve started. Today, however, will be a little different. I’m interrupting the gaming storyline to post a comic I was inspired to write after watching a particular video that premiered online yesterday. Hope you enjoy “Geeks Assemble” and as always, thanks for reading!

Just taking a moment to reflect…

Whenever a momentous occasion occurs I always use the opportunity to reflect on the past and its influence current events, and how said events can influence the future.

Yesterday I celebrated my third year of marriage to my beautiful wife.  We’ve been together a total of almost seven years but lately I’ve been focusing on the year since our last anniversary and all that’s happened since.  There have been some amazing times, both fun and enlightening, while others have been sad and downright terrifying.  I definitely see myself differently now than I did this time last year.  I can also see how the things that have shaped me into who I am now will continue to do so down the road.  I’m not going to be the exact same person that I am this time next year.  Granted, I’ll probably still read comics, and get endless enjoyment out of speculating on what new movies will be awesome and which ones will suck the big one.  But I think in the grand scheme of the world, my world, that stuff will matter a great deal less.  The things I thought were important will start to become trivial, while the things I used to take for granted will get a lot more appreciation.

This may sound a bit heavy-handed and I apologize for the lack of humor but every now and again, I need to say something poignant.  Even if it’s only to myself.

It’s Fun to be a Geek

So here’s the deal: if you know me at all, you know I’m a geek (those who don’t know me but frequent the site should be able to figure that out on their own). Even though I’m perfectly aware of this, there are those times that I don’t really think about it, while other times it’s just blatantly obvious.

For instance, as I’m typing this, I’m in my Super Mario pajamas, listening to “Weird Al” and trying to resist the urge to pop in a random disc from the Star Wars Blu-Ray (for a summary of my thoughts on this collection, see the new Geek Theory comic-NOW IN COLOR!). I stop to survey the office I’m working in and I’ve got a Comic-Con Exclusive Thor action figure (still in box) looking down at me next to a My Little Pony (not mine, honest); behind me is a drafting table covered in Geek Theory strips waiting to be finished, several Green Lantern comics waiting to be read and random crap waiting to be put away; next to that is a bookcase filled with graphic novels, video game accessories, board games, and all sorts of little collectibles, among them a Stormtrooper, a remote controlled Wall*E, and a Gollum statue; and last but not least, sitting on the floor in front of the bookcase is our Rock Band drum set just waiting to be played. Speaking of which, it might be time to turn on the Wii and rock out a bit.

But first, it might be time to change out of these pjs and actually clean up to face the world. I wonder if my Flash t-shirt is clean…?

Internet Broken: Film at 11

Yeah, so I’m typically full of excuses when it comes to the lack of new content around these parts and here’s my latest:

The Internet was broken.

By which I mean, not the internet itself, which would be cause for panic and mass hysteria, but really my modem. A decent chunk of cash later and we have a new modem but even then, nothing was fully operational. Only when talking to the cable guys (three times, mind you) was I able to get things sorted out and lo and behold: the Internet is fixed! And thus the comic that I painstakingly edited this week is up and ready to view. Sure it only takes about 20 seconds to read but I think it’s worth it. Now if only I can deliver another one before the end of the year. 😦

‘Bout time.

So after much longer than I had anticipated, I’ve added my new comic. It can be found on the webcomics page to your upper right. I’ve changed the title from “The Fandom Menace” to “Geek Theory” as it seems much more hip and current than playing off the title to a 12-year old movie. And yes, Episode 1 came out 12 years ago. God, I feel old. Anyhoo, please check it out and as always, feel free to comment. More strips are on the way and with any luck they’ll be up in less than two months!
